| Ablaze: Burning while Oil-Soaked | Be wary of catching fire when oil-soaked-you will be set "ablaze," meaning you burn more fiercely and for longer than usual, resulting in a rapid loss of health. |
| Absorbing Souls | The souls you absorb with your gauntlet will produce different effects depending on their color. The more you absorb at once, the greater their effect. |
| Action Prompts | With Action Prompts enabled via System Menu > Settings > Gameplay, icons indicating how to deal with enemy attacks will be displayed. Note: The actual icons shown will follow your control settings. |
| Areas of Concentrated Malice | Parts of Eastern Kyoto afflicted with concentrated Malice cannot be entered. You may have to purify other areas in order to make them accessible. |
| Armored Genma | Some Genma are equipped with armor that renders them impervious to attack. However, with enough hits, it can be broken. This process can be made considerably quicker by using Oni Strength: Destroy. |

| Attacking While on a Ladder | You can still attack and defend while climbing a ladder. Press Light attack to swing your sword above you, and Move Back + Light attack to attack below. |
| Awakening and Oni Armaments in Second Playthroughs | Oni Armaments and Awakened abilities will be carried over from your completed game saved data. All unlocked skills and abilities will also be carried over. The chests that formerly contained the Armaments will now contain items. |
| Basic Attacks | Press Light attack for a one-handed attack, and Heavy attack for a two-handed attack. One-handed attacks deal less damage, but are easier to land. Two-handed attacks deal more damage, but are more easily evaded. |

| Boss Rematches | You can fight any bosses you've faced again, adjusting the difficulty level as you please. You won't be able to use any items except Hozuki, but you can earn unique rewards for each difficulty level. |

| Carrying Over Progress to a New Playthrough | By loading a save in which the game has been completed, you can carry over certain items and features into a new game. The following will be carried over: Awakened Oni Abilities Including Oni Strength, Oni Vision, and Oni Agility Any enhanced basic or special abilities Hozuki Pouches and pouch enhancements (Hozuki Pouch management will become available as you progress.) Items, offerings, and some materials (You will become able to trade in red souls as you progress.) Charms and charm enhancements (Enma's Hall will become available as you progress.) | Citizens in Need | Even after a part of Eastern Kyoto has been cleared of corruption, its residents may still require assistance. Help them out to earn rewards. Their locations will be marked on your map as you progress. |
| Clearing Corrupted Areas | Cut down noxious, corruption-causing plants in order to clear areas of concentrated Malice from Eastern Kyoto, and expand your area of activity. |
| Closing Rifts in Eastern Kyoto | Eastern Kyoto is infested with Malice, and Rifts have begun to open up everywhere. Close any Rifts you come across to obtain Malicite and other useful items. |
| Countering Grabs | Press Dodge Just Before Grab Lands |
| Countering While Wall Running | Press Guard While Wall Running |
| Crimson Malice | A crimson liquid substance that releases thick clouds of Malice. It is best avoided, as exposure rapidly depletes health. |
| Curious Cases and Lion Dogs | Curious Cases and the map can be invaluable in helping you locate missing Lion Dogs, as can revisiting places you've already been to. And finding them can be well worth your while - the more you find, the better the rewards. |

| Destinations | You can look at the map to see story-related destinations. Current destinations will be marked with special icons. |
| Destroying Malice Barriers | Hold Interact in Front of a Malice Barrier |
| Drills | You can undertake various drills in the practice ground that will enable you to practice the techniques you have learned. New drills will be added as you learn new skills and improve your abilities. |
| Enemy Attacks | Close-range attacks come in two types: armed and unarmed. Avoid the former by parrying or deflecting, and the latter with a Reflex Dodge. Figuring out which you need in which moment is the key to victory. |
| Enhancing Charms | You can upgrade your charms at Enma's Hall, thereby improving their effects. Doing so will require red souls and other offerings. |
| Enhancing Equipment | Use materials to enhance equipment. Enhance your sword for increased attack, clothing for health and stamina, and gauntlet for Oni power. |
| Equipping Charms | You can enhance your charms at Enma's Hall at Rokudo-chinnoji Temple, thereby improving their effects. Doing so will require red souls and other offerings. |
| Floating Rock Cores | Shoot the cores within clusters of floating rocks to bring them crashing down, dealing damage to any enemies underneath. |
| Hidden Oni Power | Enter the Oni Portals hidden around Eastern Kyoto to obtain special powers that will allow you to enhance your equipment and abilities. They're marked on your map, and can be revealed with Oni Vision. |
| Hozuki and Hozuki Pouches | Use the equipped Hozuki Pouch to recover during combat. Restock Hozuki from pickups or your storehouse; talk to Okuni to change or enhance the pouch. |

| Locking Onto a Target | Press Lock on to lock onto a target, fixing them in the center of the screen. To switch between targets, use Previous lock-on target and Next lock-on target. |
| Malice Plants | Exposure to Malice will cause your health to slowly deplete. Cut down any nearby noxious plants to clear the air of its scourge. |
| Managing Your Pouches | Talk to Okuni to enhance your Hozuki Pouches, or to swap your currently equipped one for another. Enhancing your pouches will increase their capacity and boost their restorative power. |
| Obtaining Favor to Enhance Charms | Make offerings to accumulate favor, which can be used to enhance your charms. The favor gained will differ depending on the offering. Offerings are earned by exploring Eastern Kyoto and helping people. |
| Oni Agility | Press Interact Near Certain Walls |
| Oni Armaments: Earth-Shakers | Use the Earth-Shakers to deal major stamina damage to enemies in a given area and greatly weaken breakable armor. Hold Oni Armament to charge the hammers and increase the damage they deal. |

| Pouches from Previous Playthroughs | Hozuki pouches have been carried over from your completed game saved data. All of your enhancement data has also been carried over. Chests that formerly contained Oni Artifacts will now contain items. |
| Purple Souls | Land attacks with Oni Armaments or Break Issen to extract purple souls. Absorbing them will fill the Awakening Gauge, which will enable you to initiate an Oni Awakening. |
| Reading the Map | Move the cursor over a map icon to display important information, or set it as your destination. |
| Red Souls | Absorbing red souls will make various enhancements available. They are left behind by fallen enemies, and finishing an enemy with a Break Issen will make even more of them appear. |
| Reflex Combos | Filling your Reflex Gauge will enable you to unleash a deadly Reflex Combo. The quickest way to fill it is to Reflex Dodge unarmed attacks, but any Reflex Dodge will help at least a little. |

| Rifts | Hold Hold Absorb Near Rift After All Enemies Are Defeated |
| Rifts and Their Effects on Genma | The Rift Gauge gives an indication of how long it will be before a Rift begins producing Malice. Attack the Rift in order to destroy it before it can begin belching out its foul miasma. |
| Selecting and Using Items | Equip up to six item types from your inventory for easy access during battle. Select the item you want, then use it with the separate Use Item action. |
| Selecting Oni Armaments | Once you have acquired more than one Oni Armament, you'll need to choose which one you want to equip. |
| Special Forms | Some Genma have special forms that are stronger than usual. Their health, stamina, and attack power will all be enhanced, and some also boast unique attacks. |
| Spirit Mirrors | You can use Spirit Mirrors to save your progress at any time. Additionally, making contact with a Spirit Mirror will restore your health completely. |
| Stamina and Break Issen | Break Issen: Press Light attack or Heavy attack Near Exhausted Enemy |
| Story Progress Post-Completion | On completing the game, you can return to The Clash at Rendaino point of the story with all enhancements and items possessed at the time of completion. Talk to Takamura to continue the story again. |
| Strong Enemies Made Even Stronger | Some bosses will expend health or absorb souls in order to power themselves up. Try to avoid this by getting to any souls you see first. |
| Tactics I | Not only will parrying open up opportunities to attack, it will also fill the Blaze Gauge. While in the Blazing State, you will deal more health and stamina damage, so try to parry as much as possible. |
| Tactics II | Different enemy actions require different reactions. Unarmed attacks must be met with Reflex Dodges, grabs require you to perform grab reversals, and unavoidable attacks must be parried or deflected. |
| Tactics III | Issen attacks are powerful, but very tricky to execute. However, some enemies will telegraph their moves more obviously than others, making Issen attacks easier. |
| The Oni Bow | Hold and Release Oni Bow |
| Trading in Red Souls | Yorimasa's mysterious powers allow him to grant you various items in exchange for red souls you've collected. To do so, visit Yorimasa's Monument at Yasui Konpiragu Shrine. |
| Unlocking New Enhancements | Visiting Oni Portals allows you to further strengthen your skills and unlock new skills to acquire. The more you progress, the more Portals you'll be able to find. |
| Using Environmental Objects | Approach Object and Press Interact |
| Yellow Souls | Yellow souls are sometimes left behind by defeated enemies. Absorb them to restore your health. The lower your health, the more your enemies will leave behind. |
| Your Storehouse | Anything you cannot carry will be sent to your storehouse. Access it using a Spirit Mirror to replenish and reorganize your inventory. |
