What kind of game is it?
Capcom calls it swordplay action: a dark-fantasy Kyoto adventure built around deliberate defense, counters, exploration, and Oni powers.

The combat loop
Musashi can guard, parry at impact, deflect, dodge at the last moment, and break an enemy's posture. Precisely timed attacks become Issen finishers. Defeated enemies release red, yellow, and blue souls for experience, health, and Oni energy.
Check the posture reference for recovery timings, and use the controller and keyboard layouts to find the inputs. A well-timed reflex dodge and a parry offer different ways to answer an attack.
Is it a Soulslike?
Capcom's description is swordplay action. Producer Akihito Kadowaki describes a focus on satisfying action for a wide range of players, rather than extreme difficulty. Parrying and boss fights alone do not establish a genre label.
For play, the useful comparison is in the mechanics: time Issen counters, break posture, absorb colored souls, and use the Oni Gauntlet. Learn what each defense does before relying on habits from another action game.
Is it open world?
No. It uses connected missions and large explorable areas instead of one seamless open-world map. Those areas include side paths and optional activities, with more freedom than the opening Kiyomizu-dera route.
How long is the full game?
Difficulty, exploration, and optional encounters change the time needed. This wiki does not yet have a verified playtime range. The mission database lists objectives, prerequisites, and rewards so you can track the parts you have completed.
A standalone Onimusha story
Way of the Sword is the first new Onimusha title in more than 20 years. It stars Miyamoto Musashi in an Edo-period Kyoto distorted by Malice and overrun by Genma. Capcom rebuilt the setting's Oni and Genma concepts for this story and says there are no direct storyline connections to the earlier games, so newcomers can start here.
PS5 and DualSense features
Capcom uses haptic feedback for weapon impacts, soul absorption, cutscenes, and the scale of large Genma. Adaptive-trigger resistance increases as the Oni Bow is drawn and makes sealing a Genma Rift feel like a deliberate squeeze. The controller speaker carries soul-absorption effects and voices from the Oni Gauntlet.
The 3D-audio mix uses impulse-response recordings made inside real Japanese temples and historic residences, including height-channel positioning for flying Genma and collapsing structures.
