Lore

A sacred landmark under Malice

Way of the Sword opens around Kiyomizu-dera Temple, one of Kyoto's best-known sacred sites. The route crosses the temple approach, courtyards, interiors, and wooden stage as Malice and Genma overtake them.

Each encounter on the climb teaches a new threat, including ranged attacks, armor, posture damage, and status effects. The route ends with Musashi's duel against Sasaki Ganryu on the temple stage.

After the duel, Musashi is transported to the Oni Refuge. The story later returns him to a larger section of Kyoto affected by the same invasion.

The real Kiyomizu-dera

The real Otowa-san Kiyomizu-dera traces its founding to 778 and occupies the slope of Mount Otowa in eastern Kyoto. Its grounds extend across roughly 130,000 square meters and contain around thirty Buddhist temple buildings, including the Main Hall. The temple's history is closely associated with devotion to Kannon and with generations of visitors from many levels of society.

Fire destroyed much of the complex repeatedly across its long history. Most of the present buildings were reconstructed in 1633, placing their familiar form close to the early-Edo atmosphere that Capcom evokes. Kiyomizu-dera is also included among the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto recognized by UNESCO.

The game uses recognizable roofs, slopes, gates, timber interiors, and the temple's wooden stage. Malice and Genma alter those spaces for the opening route.
