Lore
Musashi's smiling rival
Sasaki Ganryu challenges Musashi at Kiyomizu-dera. Like Musashi, he was killed by Genma and revived with an Oni Gauntlet. He pursues his rival obsessively, having come close to matching his swordsmanship without surpassing him.
After his defeat at Kiyomizu-dera, a white-robed man encourages Ganryu to kill people and take their souls. Ganryu follows that advice and becomes consumed by the power it gives him. A frightened survivor later directs Musashi to a murderer at Yasaka Pagoda in To Live Is to Suffer.
Story spoilers: the severed gauntlet
Later, Musashi's allies keep Ganryu's severed arm because the gauntlet cannot be removed from it. They discuss the gauntlet's attempt to rebuild its bearer, while doubting that it can succeed.
Shizuka subsequently senses Ganryu at Rokudo-chinnoji. Musashi insists that he killed him, but the report sends the group back to the temple. The dialogue makes his apparent return a new threat rather than treating the Kiyomizu-dera duel as the end of his story.
The historical rivalry
Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Ganryu evoke one of Japan's best-known sword duels. Historical and literary accounts name Musashi's opponent as Sasaki Kojiro and associate Ganryu with his school. Their legendary 1612 duel gave Ganryujima its name.
Capcom places that rivalry inside Onimusha's fictional Kyoto. Ganryu's Oni Gauntlet, soul powers, cruelty, and part in the Genma invasion are inventions for this game.
